Dear Judy & Staff:
“Having just listened to your CD, I must compliment you...it was well done, insightful, informative & most helpful. It brought tears to my eyes as I found myself relating to some of the situations & answers. The CD in conjunction with the Workbook is a good tool to help me jump start my association with your Support Group. I want to thank you for the empathy & advice, as I practice the suggestions made in the CD. Your perspective into these attacks have greatly relieved my mind & I'm looking forward to our next Support meeting.
   “Sincerely, Tippy ”

Don’t panic: Relief on
the way for panic attack victims

Woman hopes to form group stressing rationality

By Dominika Maslikowski
The Daily News
BULLHEAD CITY- When Judy Schiffman had her first panic attack in 1989, there weren’t many support groups for people with panic disorders.
She later developed agoraphobia and avoided situations that brought symptoms of panic. She wanted to get help but wasn’t impressed with the support groups she came across.
So, she decided to start her own. She formed Panic Relief, Inc., a non-profit organization based in New Jersey that’s geared to help people with panic attacks, anxiety, and agoraphobia.
Now, with the internet, Schiffman said there may be more support and information, but the stigma hasn’t gone away.
“People who have panic disorders are highly accomplished individuals and I think the misconception’s that there’s something wrong with them,” she said. “There’s a lot of fear from the symptoms that occur. It has nothing to do with the personal power or availability, but fear. “Because of the stigmatism and because people don’t believe they have a panic disorder, they’re in denial and they’re still searching for something physically wrong with them. And that goes back to stigmatism. If they thought panic attacks were treatable like headaches, they’d get treatment.”
Schiffman said she draws on her math degree to help people learn to think things through with logic and reason....
Panic Relief, Inc. offers eight workshops with topics ranging from anger to self-esteem. Those joining the support group are required to complete one workshop, at a cost of $12, before participating.
While women report the disorder more frequently than men, Schiffman said the sufferers tend to be genetically predisposed or have history of anxiety or overwhelming circumstance in their life, whether it be loss, stress, or trauma.
Because of the stigmatism of panic attacks, many people don’t seek treatment and self-medicate or develop agoraphobia. For those who do seek help, treatment can consist of medication, counseling, or both.
“I think that people get better depending on their bodies and their personality,” Schiffman said. “For certain people, medicine works while they’re in some type of therapy treatment, and for some people medicine doesn’t work. Everybody’s chemistry responds differently to medication.”
Treatment also depends on the degree of attacks and on the patients willingness to take medication.
“It’s a matter of personal preference. A doctor is the only one who can diagnose if the panic disorder is just a panic disorder or if there’s something else going on physically.”
But a complete cure is uncertain.
“It’s something that’s managed. If you continually work on yourself, you can continually manage it,” she said. “You can go for years (without an attack), then it can flare up again. And if you continually manage your life, it may never happen again.”
